This is an Excel spreadsheet that combines the work of Aihara et al with that of D'Amico and Stamey et al to derive a calculated tumor volume of PC that would be expected at RP. This program uses data from untreated patients only. The following concepts are part of this created program:
  • The prostate gland contains both malignant and benign cell populations that both contribute to the production of PSA.
  • The benign component of PSA is calculated by taking the prostate gland volume and multiplying times 0.066.
  • The gland volume is obtained at the time of transrectal ultrasound of the prostate or from an endorectal MRI of the prostate. Less accurate determinations are from a CT scan of the prostate or a digital rectal examination.
  • The malignant component equals the total PSA minus the benign component.
  • The Gleason score read by an expert is important since the amount of PSA leaked from the prostate cancer into the blood (PSA Leak) is related to the Gleason score.
  • The calculated tumor volume is determined by dividing the malignancy-related PSA by the PSA leak for the validated Gleason score.
  • A validated Gleason score is one read by an expert in PC pathology. Some of those experts that we have recognized are listed in the PC Address Book on the PCRI website in the Resources section.

Special Note - When using the spread sheet, ONLY modify the yellow cells with your data. All other cells and calculations will be done automatically.

Click on the appropriate link below to download the form. All file download times are less than one minute with a 28.8K modem.

Download 000PC_Vol_Ver_Strum_2001.xls - Either left mouse click the link or right click the link and choose "Save Target As" or "Save Link As". Note the location where you saved the file. File type is for Microsoft Excel 2000/7.0/97 and other compatible spread sheet programs.

If you have problems downloading the above file in Excel format, try the file below in "zip" format.

Download 000PC_Vol_Ver_Strum_2001.zip - Either left mouse click the link or right click the link and choose "Save Target As" or "Save Link As". Note the location where you saved the file. Contains the file in "zipped" format for easier downloading. File type is for Microsoft Word 2000/7.0/97 and other compatible spread sheet programs.

Downloading Instructions:

  • Download the appropriate file to your computer now if you have not already done so. Not the location.
  • Unzip the file if needed. If using WinZip, right click the file once. Then left click once "Extract to folder" i.e. C:\Windows\Desktop\PC_Vol_Ver_5.xls" (file name is an example if downloaded to desktop using Win95, yours may vary)
  • To open the form, double click [left mouse button] on the file name.
  • If you are not able to unzip the file or don't have pkunzip or winzip, you will need to download unzipping software first. You can get pkunzip here or get winzip here (free). For pkunzip, the downloaded file is named pkzip.zip, but it is really an executable. You need to rename it to pkzip.exe after you download it since browsers will typically not allow an executable winzip.
