Find an Expert Physician

While we recommend that a patient go to an expert in the treatment of his choice, it is difficult to obtain information on the skill level, experience or results for individual physicians. The treatments for prostate cancer are complex with significant risk of complications. Obtaining excellent results requires extensive experience. We suggest asking questions like:

- How many procedures have you performed?
- How many do you do each month?
- Have you published your personal results for curing cancer and limiting complications?
- Why do you feel your recommended treatment is best for me?
- What are your success rates for patients with a diagnosis similar to mine?
- Would you provide me with names of patients I could contact?

You may want to do a search of PubMed to see if a physician has published any papers. You could try a search like:

"prostate cancer" AND Scholz M
                    or
prostatectomy AND Brosman S

If you are not familiar with PubMed, it is a great source to search for medical abstracts. It is often possible to obtain the full text version from a medical library or even your local library via inter-library loan. You can access it at:

You can often obtain valuable information from a local prostate cancer Support Group.

This is by no means a complete list of the premier prostate cancer physicians. Absence from the list should not be considered a negative assessment by PCRI.
