Conference Overview:

Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) and Foundation for Cancer Research and Education (FCRE) are dedicated to educating the public about prostate cancer, pursuing research into the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, and improving the present level of care for men with this disease.

Men with prostate cancer confront a bewildering array of choices about how to evaluate and treat their cancer. Also, these men are of an age where they commonly encounter heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and other health concerns. Any decisions made about prostate cancer treatment should take into consideration the patient's other medical concerns.

Of course, treatment decisions must also incorporate a patient's preferences about the balance between quality and length of life. We call the process by which all of these factors are integrated "a comprehensive approach to living with prostate cancer."

Conference Objectives:

  1. Review traditional staging techniques and how to integrate blood tumor markers, erMRSI, ProstaScint, and specialty pathology studies.
  2. Identify when to utilize local therapy: perineal or retropublic prostatectomy, brachytherapy, IMRT or cryosurgery.
  3. Understand the role of ultrasound, especially Tissue Harmonic Color Doppler, via a live demonstration.
  4. Discuss Androgen Deprivation therapy as primary therapy or for advances disease and Androgen Deprivation Syndrome.
  5. Describe the role of diet and nutrition in the treatment of PC.
  6. Review traditional and novel treatments for incontinence.
  7. Explain the use of chemotherapy and supportive drugs in advanced PC.
